Don't be afraid to spend the money, if you have it, to see the island by air. Your trip must include a flight over Pu'u O'o Vent which is producing all the recent hot lava flowing everywhere.

I think that seeing the island by helicopter might be more enjoyble than by airplane. You can get very close to the site you are viewing in one of these
