The Big Island is composed of several volcanos in various stages of
activity, including the active volcanos Mauna Loa, Kilauea and Hualalai, the
dormant volcano Mauna Kea, and the almost extinct volcano comprising the
Kohala Mountains which last erupted about 60,000 years ago
A drive along Kohala Mountain Road, a little over 20 miles, will produce some
stunning views of the leeward coastline and glimpses of some of the ranches
in the area. You will also see windmills which have been pressed into
service in some parts of the island by our electric company
