The Big Island is a quilt of different vistas. Many people comment that on getting off the plane at Keohole Airport, they feel they have been transported to a barren planet. All around Keohole Airport are lava fields interspersed with arid plains. There is very little to suggest the lush, tropical islands seen in travel brochures.
Some lava flows are very distinct and a glance at the Big Island map available in stores all around the island may even produce a date for the flow you are viewing
